A11-05 EMERALD REC

Available by application only

Introducing
the Aventi A11-05 EMERALD REC

We created a 300-carat gem as rich and vivid as a Colombian Emerald.

Known for producing one of the most beautiful Royal Blue sapphire materials in the world, even we could not find a way to make a green as rich and vivid as a Colombian Emerald - from sapphire.

We had success earlier this year by creating a British racing green sapphire - a watch only a handful of family members have been lucky enough to purchase - our attempts to brighten the sapphire cost us months of work.

Our pursuit for Emerald gave us no choice but to change our approach.

Instead of limiting ourselves only to Sapphire Crystal, we decided to experiment with other crystalline materials.

Aventi

We tried experimenting with a number of new materials from the world of optics and lasers before developing a special crystalline material we have called Rare Earth Crystal (REC).

Made in collaboration with our partners in Russia, Emerald REC is molecularly similar to Garnet. It's a proprietary synthetic crystal structure: capable of the rich and vivid color of the finest Colombian Emeralds, with greater durability and resistance than a natural stone.

Rare Earth Minerals are doped into the crystalline creation to produce our exact emerald colour, leaving it as rich and vivid as a Colombian Emerald.

how this rare piece is made

Natural crystals are formed within the earth's crust over millions of years. Raw minerals are liquefied by magma flowing from the earth's core. These molten minerals can begin to crystallize as they slowly cool.

All crystals are formed from one point, this happens by chance in natural settings. In the same way that an ice cube in water grows outwards, crystals grow from this single structure known as the seed crystal.

These conditions can be replicated in the lab to cultivate crystals with a great deal more control. By liquifying an exact ratio of minerals inside a vacuum chamber and precisely introducing a perfect seed crystal. What naturally takes millions of years, we can perfect in a month.

Emerald REC is a proprietary form of the synthetic gem YAG (Yttrium Aluminium Garnet), a gem that is not found anywhere in nature but formed using the same principles. With a technique called crystal pulling, it is possible to grow Emerald REC with the rich and vivid colours of Colombian Emerald whilst delivering a greater degree of hardness.

In a quartz crucible, polycrystalline silicon is heated to over 1400°C (2550°F). This temperature is hotter than magma (1300°C). It is performed in an airtight chamber with a controlled atmosphere of argon gas in order to prevent contamination from oxidizing. Liquid Silicon is precisely infused with trace elements of Chromium and other proprietary minerals. Chromium is a lustrous metal that is one of the primary ingredients in stainless steel, as it is capable of producing a high polish with excellent resistance to tarnishing. Furthermore, this mineral produces rich green colors when suspended in crystal form.

In this process, a rotating crystal seed is precisely introduced into the molten liquid to jump-start the crystallization process and eliminate the random effect of natural crystallisation. Slowly lowering the temperature in the chamber simulates the cooling of the earth's crust, initiating the crystallisation of the liquid silicon on the seed crystal.

A cylindrical silicon crystal hanging on the seed is formed as the seed crystal is slowly pulled upwards. The chamber temperature and the rate at which the crystal is pulled are both carefully regulated so that a constant diameter is obtained.

The equivalent of millions of years of growth in the space of 4 weeks.

To begin the production process, the large piece of Emerald REC has to be carved into smaller pieces. When working with stainless steel or titanium, this is as easy as cutting a block from a larger sheet. The use of unconventional methods is required when working with crystals.

EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) is a process that involves tensioning a thin wire, in our case tungsten, between two electrically charged diodes and putting it in contact with a conductive material. A spark of electricity is created when this wire contacts a conductive material, causing the material to vaporize and slowly cut without causing vibrations or abrasions. To prevent shorting, the entire process must be performed within a dielectric (non-conductive) fluid, like deionized water.

Wire EDM enables us to cut perfect REC blanks that are ready for the delicate machine process while also preserving the most precious material and reducing the possibility of breakage. Emerald REC is now ready to start the delicate process of being carved into the distinctive Aventi shape.

Turning a rectangular piece of Emerald REC into the most complex watch case in the world.

After the Emerald REC is cut to size, it is taken to a five-axis CNC machine to begin a 72 step CNC process that will take eight weeks to complete. Using CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) machining results in higher levels of accuracy than is possible by hand, since a single mistake can be disastrous.

We slowly remove micron thin layers of the case with diamond-tipped cutting tools as small as 0.3mm. Carefully carving out the 68 facets and 110 edges of the Aventi case within a 0.01mm tolerance. This tolerance is crucial for both the aesthetic finish of the piece and to ensure the water-resistance of at least 50 meters.

REC Emerald cases are cut in the following stages:

  • To create the tapered shape of the Aventi case, an outer edge is cut into the REC blank.
  • Each of the ten edges of the case's unique interior are cut, ready to house the dual barrel tourbillon.
  • As the outer facets of the case are cut, the signature shape of the Aventi case emerges. It is one of the most complex and time-consuming steps. In order to ensure accuracy and symmetry, each facet requires the CNC machine to be calibrated and measured in a process that takes at least four hours.
  • The underside of the case is cut out, except for screw holes.
  • The watch glass groove is cut; this step is essential for the piece's water resistance as it prevents the Sapphire Crystal from sitting unevenly in the case.
  • A recessed groove cut for the band includes the attachment points for the spring bar.
  • The last step is to drill the holes for the proprietary screws on the back of the case.

What could go wrong?

  • A movement or mistake as small as 0.01mm can cause cracking or shattering of the crystal, losing hundreds of hours of work and months.
  • All 72 steps of the CNC process must be carefully monitored at all times to ensure no excess pressure is applied to the material.
  • Each case must be carefully secured in a dampening clamp system as the high-frequency vibrations of the machining process can cause the Crystal to shatter.

Due to abrasions and vibrations caused by the cutting machines, the surface of the REC can appear foggy after eight weeks of intricate machining. To restore the vivid green colour we spent so long developing, each case must be polished and buffed. Each facet must be impeccable. It is a process that must be done entirely by hand by a single craftsman.

While pressure is needed to polish the crystal case, it is the amount of pressure that can cause disaster. Too little pressure prevents the abrasives from cutting through the hard variations on the crystal's surface. In the case of too much pressure, the crystal can shatter, edge details can be lost, and the symmetry and sharp design of the piece will be distorted.

It can be devastating and expensive to lose a REC crystal case at this stage. To prevent this, a single craftsperson polishes the case by hand from beginning to end. Only the touch of a knowledgeable craftsman can ensure the correct amount of pressure is applied to every surface.

Polishing occurs in two stages:

STAGE 1: Fine Sandpaper

After the machining process, the polishing process begins using fine sandpaper to even out any inconsistency or marks on the material.

STAGE 2: Wax and Lambs wool

Wax is applied to a lambs wool polishing wheel and is used to perfect each facet of the REC case; buffing the crystal to its most brilliant form. The wax acts as a gentle cutting compound between the lambs wool and crystal to remove an extremely thin layer. Within the wax, there are microscopic abrasive particles capable of cutting and perfecting the surface of the crystal to a perfectly flat finish.

What are the risks?

  • Before polishing, it is challenging to see any micro-cracks or splits in the crystal material. Polishing can expose any of these faults, or the faults can cause shattering caused by the high-frequency vibrations of the polishing wheel.
  • The Perfect amount of pressure must be applied to each facet of the case; too little and it won’t polish, too much... and disaster!

We created a 300-carat gem as rich and vivid as a Colombian Emerald

Emerald REC is a proprietary synthetic crystal that exhibits the same color as a Colombian emerald but is harder and more durable.

Developed in collaboration with our partners in Russia, Emerald REC (Rare Earth Crystal) is a synthetic crystal never before used in watchmaking. The crystal can have the deep color of Colombian Emeralds but is harder and more durable than the natural stone.

Thousands of hours can be lost in a single moment

Due to the complexity of producing and machining Emerald REC, there is a natural limitation and fewer than 100 pieces can be produced per year.

Innovation of materials in watchmaking demands a review of every aspect of production, a rethinking of every process. A single mistake as small as 0.01mm in Crystal machining can result in thousands of hours of work being lost.

Aventi
Built to last generations

Unlike steel and precious metals used in watchmaking, Emerald REC is crystalline material meaning it's naturally more resistant to scratches, daily wear, and deterioration.

Just like a natural stone, Emerald REC is a crystalline structure, with a hardness rating of 8.5 on the Moh's hardness scale. Hardness is a measure of a materials scratch resistance, the strength of the bonds between molecules and how difficult it is to separate them. Emerald REC is not only aesthetically striking but more robust and scratch-resistant than the top grades of Stainless Steel.

A brilliant-cut diamond has 58 facets, our case has 68 facets & 110 edges, with no curves - it is the most complex watch case on the market.

Each facet of the Emerald REC case is hand polished to perfection using a 2 stage polishing and buffing process. A single craftsperson polishes and buffs every face. Beginning with fine sandpaper, then buffing wax and lambswool. The exact amount of pressure must be applied to every facet; too little and the polish won’t work, too much and months of work can be lost instantly.

Taking anti-reflective technology to its extremes. While some major manufacturers only apply one layer on the inside of the watch glass. A total of 14 layers of anti-reflective coating have been applied to both sides of the Sapphire crystal watch glass.

As a result, most reflections and glare are absorbed into the complex layers of the AR coating. By coating the watch glass on both sides, we control both the amount of light entering the watch as well as the amount of reflection off of it.

An AR coating can not only reduce reflection, but also improve light transmission through a watch crystal, allowing a watch dial, colour, and texture to come into sharper focus.

Aventi
A DLC Dial, the most robust black coating in watchmaking.

A minimum of ten dials are produced for every watch, allowing us to choose - under a microscope - the ideal dial for each piece. Each dial is precision-crafted using an iron mould that's designed and produced in-house.

Once the optimal dial is selected, it is mounted on a spinning carousel inside a vacuum chamber. Heated to over 150°C the material is bombed with Ions suspended in argon gas to remove any micro oxides on the material’s surface. The dial is then treated with a DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating, the most durable black coating in watchmaking.

The dial is then silk printed with Swiss BGW9 Super-LumiNova, requiring precision within 0.01mm. No matter how accurate the watch movement is, if the minute track on the dial isn't perfectly applied, it's impossible to tell time correctly.

After the dials have been aesthetically checked, quality control is performed under a microscope. In the event of a mistake finer than a hair, or a single line without crisp corners, the dial must be cleaned and the process must be re-run.

Aventi
Custom injection moulded FKM Rubber.

The most comfortable and durable band we have ever created.

FKM rubber is renowned for its strength and ability to withstand the elements without cracking, tearing or fading, all whilst remaining soft and flexible. FKM’s durability stems from within the molecular structure of the rubber, twice as dense as that of natural rubber. Resistant to acids, oils, and heat. FKM rubber has proven itself to be durable in the automotive and aerospace industry, and now we’re bringing it off of the race track and onto your wrist.

Using a custom mould designed and produced in-house, each Aventi Strap is individually injection moulded. The rubber formula must be precisely blended and superheated into a molten liquid able to be manipulated and moulded. Under high pressure, this liquid rubber is forced into the mould to ensure every part is properly filled to maximise the strength and durability of the finished product. Finally, to confirm their quality, each strap is individually inspected in order to ensure sharp edges, consistent colour and precise shape.

Aventi
Emerald REC cut with 47 individual facets with the precision of 0.01mm.

The Crown of the Aventi A11-05 Emerald comes with a selection of interesting problems during its production. The Crown is a direct connection to the watch’s movement. As such, every facet must be machined within a tolerance of 0.01mm to preserve water resistance. 47 individual facets are intricately carved into the 6.2mm RREC Crown. Every cut must be carefully measured and calibrated; one wrong move can crack or shatter the piece, possibly destroying weeks of work.

The centre of each crown is then hollowed out and replaced with a machined piece of 316L Stainless Steel. This is done to give the 1.2mm crown stem a better material to combine with and allow the cutting of a 0.2mm recessed Lume atop the crown.

Aventi
Custom crafted in-house.

Designed and produced in-house in 316L stainless steel, the Aventi deployant clasp has been designed with feel and longevity in mind. Unlike many components, there is no way to know the correct spring tension of steel alloys for an optimal feel before production. A multitude of sample clasps were produced, some with spring size adjustments as small as 0.02mm until the perfect feeling was found. Closing the clasp should elicit the feeling of sliding a gated shifter into gear with perfectly matched revs.

Aventi
Produced to perfection.

To ensure only the best possible hands are used, over ten sets of hands are individually pressed and checked for each watch. The hands are checked under a microscope to ensure every line of both the outer and inner edges is perfectly straight and even. Once the best set of hands is selected, they are individually cleaned and prepared for colouring.

Once Prepared, each pair of hands is suspended in a vacuum chamber and coated in white pigment for increased legibility. This pigment coating is then inspected, and the handset moves to lume printing. Each hand is individually silk printed with Swiss Super-LumiNova BGW9 luminous material within a tolerance of 0.01mm. Once passing final inspection, each handset can be married with their selected movement ready for production.
