Clasp Ghost

The butterfly clasp is a crucial part of watch design and wearer comfort that is often overlooked and more complicated than most expect. However, the buckle should fill you with confidence in your watches security whilst also being stylish, sleek and comfortable.

Using Grade 5 titanium and 316L stainless steel, we developed a butterfly clasp from the ground up and built that clasp to last generations. Every clasp component is designed, manufactured and assembled in-house for a secure feel and increased longevity. Sixteen separate pieces make up the deployant clasp, CNC cut in house with a tolerance of 0.03mm, hand polished and assembled.

Crafted from
grade 5 Titanium

All external surfaces of the clasp are made from grade 5 titanium, enhanced by combining mirror finishing and perlage. The internal components of the clasp are 316L stainless steel, a high-quality medical-grade steel alloy. It was decided to use 316L stainless to increase durability after multiple iterations of tests. This boosted the rated number of actuations from 3000 to 5000 and exceeded the industry norm.

1 week Raw material preparation

Each clasp is crafted in a combination of Grade-5 titanium for all external components and 316L Stainless Steel for the internal components.

316L stainless steel is a form of low carbon austenitic stainless steel famed for its corrosion and heat resistance. So what do turbochargers, medical equipment and jet engines have in common? They are all produced in 316L stainless steel.

4 weeks Component manufacturing

The butterfly clasp is made of 16 individual components; each piece is crucial to the feel of the clasp and its strength. In addition to being designed and assembled in-house, all sixteen components are machined within 0.03mm of tolerance; if a single component is outside of this tolerance, the clasp's feel is affected.

2 weeks Finishing beyond reason

The clasp is hand finished using a multidimensional combination of Mirror titanium and perlage finishing. Both of these finishing techniques must be done entirely by hand. Perlage, a french word meaning pearl finishing, for generations has been a symbol of high-quality craftsmanship.

While the clasp's interior faces are accented with perlage, the exterior is finished with mirror titanium to match the case.

1 week Assembly, creating a feeling only possible by hand

Deceptively complex, the clasp is assembled entirely by hand. A piece of machinery cannot assemble the clasp more efficiently or securely than it can be done by hand. Each component of the clasp is crafted with such tight tolerances that assembly is an extremely precise process. This stage is also paramount to ensure the correct clasp feel and to do any adjustments that may need to be made.
